    What is self-love?

Self-love is about removing negative feelings about yourself that are holding you back and increasing the positive. It creates a sense of self-worth and will help you stop self-sabotage.

But you also have to practice unconditional self-acceptance, the act of noticing and accepting where you are right now without judging it.

This might remind you of mindfulness meditation, a complementary practice to self-loving affirmations, where we observe our thoughts, sensations, and feelings in gentle non-judging awareness.

    Self-love is not:

❌ Selfish: loving yourself helps you love others too

❌ Conditional: you are loving yourself as you are today, and not waiting for something to happen before

❌ Defensive: loving yourself is also recognizing your flaws and accepting them while trying to improve
    It is:

✅ Treating yourself like you would treat a friend: notice how you talk to yourself, would you talk to a friend like that? If the answer is no, this article will help you.

✅ Accepting where you are right now: you are doing your best every single day and progress is not linear

✅ Doing the inner work, lovingly: lack of self-love can be paralyzing and even lead to self-sabotage.

    Why use affirmations?

Daily positive affirmations can change your thoughts, when you combine this with deliberate action, it impacts your reality and your health. They can be a motivator to change the way you act in the world and bring change to it this way.

While words of affirmation can seem cheesy and awkward, they are actually a good way to train your mind to think positively about a topic and react differently. Positivity has so many benefits as it reduces stress, and helps you live up to your full potential.

Positive affirmations are for everyone: women, men, even couples, or families as you can even practice them with your kids.

How to practice these self-love affirmations?

    1. Find 2 or 3 affirmations that resonate with you

Read through the affirmations, find a few that you feel drawn to. Where you really feel “oh I really need this one!” or “I’m not doing this enough”. Don’t use more than two or three affirmations at the same time.

    2. Make them yours

Yes, customize these affirmations to add exactly what you need.

For example, if feelings of low self-worth are preventing you from applying to that dream job, “I have everything I need within myself” can become “I have everything I need within myself to pursue the career of my dreams.”

    3. Bring them with you

Next, take the affirmations and add them to the note app on your phone or computer so that you can always have them with you.

Put your affirmation in a place where you’ll see it often: your phone’s screen saver for example. A post-it placed in a strategic spot works well too.

    4. Feel the feelings

These work by changing the way you feel and think about yourself.

Read the affirmation out loud or in your head and really feel the feelings it brings. This is the most important part of this mindful technique.

You can also visualize the affirmation in your head or attach an image to it.

    5. Practice often and consistently

You are trying to train your mind to think differently so make sure you practice these positive affirmations for self-esteem consistently, staying at least two weeks with an affirmation.

You also need to practice them often, especially when you catch yourself feeling low self-esteem or down on yourself. Positive morning affirmations are a particularly good way to start the day on a higher note.

    6. Bonus technique: add them to a mantra meditation

A mantra is a sentence you repeat in your head during a meditation, a bit like an affirmation right?

Here is how you can create a self-love mantra for your next affirmation meditation:

    • Choose an affirmation

    • Set a timer, 5 minutes is enough

    • Repeat the affirmation in your head, timing it with inhales and exhales to be aware of your breath

    • Really feel the affirmation and maybe even visualize it if you can. An easy visualization is feeling a bubble of loving energy that expands with every inhale and that you direct towards yourself with every exhale.
